Love thy Neighbour?

As a child, my cul-de-sac street was peppered with playful children on bikes and roller skates. Watchful parents sat together on the green, sharing stories over tea in mugs emblazoned with ‘World’s Best Mum and Dad.’ Scores of laughter in varying pitch would drift over rooftops. Neighbours greeted as friends.

Money, work, family stresses and the toll of the credit crunch are just a few factors that can drive anyone to a state of despair and uncertainty. Families or individuals may need help and support, but haven’t the means to help them get through their times of trouble. Unemployment is a major factor as recent results show that unemployment climbs to 2.47 million, the highest in 14 years.

Dispatches Distorts

On June 22nd Channel 4 aired ‘Dispatches – Rape in the City’. Narrated by Sorious Samura, the documentary aimed to uncover the extent and cause of the problem of rape in the city. Samura and his team researched gang-rape with three or more perpetrators all under 25 years old using police departments, court listings, news reports, journalists and barristers; and only included cases where convictions were recorded.
Marginalised Communities

Britain is becoming an increasingly diverse society. This can be seen as a positive step towards a greater understanding and mixing of different cultures into our own. On the other hand, this also raises issues as to whether these communities should adopt British values and customs and as a result, risk losing their own identity.
Is it a case that they should adapt or vice versa?
