Despite huge pressure from China towards the US not to have talks with the Dalai Lama, President Obama met the Tibetan spiritual Leader in a low key meeting at the White House.  They discussed promoting peace, human values and religious harmony.
China strongly against the meeting and warned that relations between Beijing and Washington would be further tarnished.

The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule and has since been living in India ever since.
He is seen by Westerners as a holy figure and his teachings are practiced by the West.

He has met political and religious leaders throughout the world and visited the late John Paul II on several occasions.  His mission throughout was to protect Tibetans from Chinese rule by peaceful and non-violent means.  However, some Tibetans activists do not believe pacifism always works.

Despite the Tibetans suffering from the Chinese he is calm, friendly and smiling figure who projects enlightenment through himself and through his teachings.

“The path of non violence is an irrevocable commitment and it is important that there be no departure at all from its path.”
Dalai Lama
